Brazil, Santa Catarina, São Bento do Sul, Rio Natal, 450 m [C. Mielke dissection 34.365] (CGCM). Arrows I–III refer to diagnostic characters as referenced in the text: I = tergite VIII, II = papillae anales, III = apophyses anteriores. Scale bar = 1 mm.
Diagnosis.
Cicinnus orthane
can be recognized by the tan coloration and irregular splotches of dark brown scales that variously cover the wings. The discal region of the fore- and hindwing bears a distinct, ovoid to circular brown-gray spot. Similar species include
C. incerta
(
Möschler, 1878
)
,
C. pudens
Schaus, 1911
,
C. solvens
Dyar, 1914
, and
C. melgibsoni
Herbin & Monzón, 2015
.
Cicinnus orthane
displays the most yellow (rather than dull brown-gray to nearly orange) ground coloration (though the variable blotches of dark brown may result in
C. orthane
appearing overall darker). The discal spots of
C. orthane
are the most well-developed of these species.
Distribution.
(
Fig. 10
) The
type
locality of
C. orthane
is Concepción,
Chile
, but considering our above discussion, this may be erroneous. The same, or a related species, from southeastern
Brazil
which we treat here as
C.
cf
orthane
, is widely distributed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest in the states of
Bahia
,
Espírito Santo
,
Rio de Janeiro
,
São Paulo
, and
Santa Catarina
and from semi-deciduous forest of
Minas Gerais
and
São Paulo
.
Remarks.
Fig. 6a
displays the unique scale pouch of segment VIII seen in this species. Other dissected
Cicinnus
s. l.
, such as
C. melsheimeri
, are not known to have a compact pouch of scales tucked in the intersegmental region on the ventrum of VIII.
