Agrion boucardi
Selys, 1865 [junior synonym of
Telebasis salva
(
Hagen, 1861
)
]
Etymology
:
Telebasis
=
Tele
, Greek (τῆλε) for distance +
basis
, a Greek (βάσις) feminine noun for pedestal or foundation; a common suffix used in
Coenagrionidae
.
Generic characterization
. Small to medium sized
Coenagrionidae
(
22–42 mm
), angulated frons, pale postocular spots and pale occipital bar absent, rear of head pale or black, females with a paired flap–like structures projected anteriorly on anterior margin of the hind lobe of prothorax (vestigial in
T. filiola
(
Perty, 1834
)
,
T. inalata
(
Calvert, 1961
)
and
T. willinki
Fraser, 1948
) and a mesanepisternal groove (
Fig. 1B
), posterior lobe of male prothorax without any elevated structure. Cercus in the shape of a half tube, the ventral face longitudinally excavated (
Fig. 3B
) and medial face with at least one extremely sclerotized tooth (
Fig. 3A
). Penis with inner fold, never with lateral folds in ectal surface of S3, terminal fold present but never projected postero-laterally.

Remark:
von Ellenrieder & Garrison (2007)
stated that the female described by Selys (1876) as
T. erythrina
is, in fact, the female of
T. corallina
(Selys, 1876)
. Together with
T. erythrina
, four other species whose females are still unknown (in bold in the list below) will be treated in this paper provisionally as
Telebasis
. Males of these species do not have cerci with the structure found in
Helveciagrion
nor penises as found in
Juenagrion
gen. nov.
Furthermore, they were originally classified under this genus.
Analyzing the tandem linkage of species of
Telebasis
(
Fig. 2
) and
Helveciagrion
(
Fig. 8
,
9
) we can observe how the anatomical differences in the cerci of the males adapt differently to the anatomical differences in the thorax of the females of these two genera. In
Telebasis
, the cerci open and involve the anterior part of the female’s thorax, anchoring, through its medial surface, to the mesanepisternal grooves in the female’s thorax and the paraproctus attach to the sides (the longer ones) or to the central region (the short ones) of the prothorax. Regardless of the length of the cercus there is a mesanepisternal groove corresponding to its length, e.g.:
T. willinki
with very small cerci the groove is smaller and closer to the mediodorsal carina, while in
T. carmesina
Calvert, 1909
, with its long cerci, the groove is further away of the mediodorsal carina. In
Helveciagrion
the approximate condition of the cerci reduces the opening extension of those, being anchored by its dorsal chitinized tubercles to the mesepisternal fossae.
