Genus
Berardius
Duvernoy, 1851
Two species have been recognized based on genetic analyses,
B. arnuxii
in the Southern Hemisphere and
B. bairdii
in the North Pacific Ocean (
Dalebout 2002
,
Dalebout
et al
. 2004
).
Mead and Brownell (2005)
suggested that
Berardius
could be monotypic. A third and as yet unnamed species (informally known as ‘Karasu’) was described in
2016 in
the North Pacific (
Morin
et al.
2017
).
