Westwoodilla
sp.
Material Examined
: CNCR20397; number of specimens: 1; PR station; collection date:
28/11/98
.
Distribution
: Several species have been recorded from the British Isles (
Lincoln, 1979
),
Scotland
(
Beare & Moore, 1998
) and
Puerto Rico
(
Shoemaker, 1934
).
Range extension
: This is the first record of this genus for the Gulf of
Mexico
at PR inlet, Términos Lagoon, Campeche.
Remarks
: This genus has been reported as marine cosmopolitan and prefers cold water; it occurs between 2 – 2
900 m
depth (
Barnard & Karaman, 1991
). Probably one of the most interesting record of this study is the finding of
Westwodilla
sp. in
2 m
depth, but considering that the sample was made at nigth in an inlet where normally the water is not calm during winter time (november), as well as, having account that normally oedicerotids often enter the water column at night. It is logic to think that the appearance of
Westwodilla
sp is feacible to carried out. On the other hand, this amphipod must be a new species to be described.
The salinity and temperature measured at the collection site at PR inlet ranged from 25 to 27 %o and from 25 to 26 °C, respectively.
