C.Presl, Reliq. Haenk. 1: 65. 1825. Range: —Northern Peru to Bolivia ( CH , CO, PO). Ecology: —Rare (known from three collections); saxicolous on rocks and cliffs, often on calcareous substrates; 2550–4100 m . Notes: —Segments rounded, densely scaly abaxially, glabrous adaxially (although the upper surface may be partly hidden by the scales borne on the abaxial blade surface); rhizome scales concolorous, red-brown. Cheilanthes arequipensis (Maxon) R.M.Tryon & A.F.Tryon , from central Peru to northern Chile and northwestern Argentina , is expected to occur in Bolivia . It differs from C. scariosa by its oblong segments, long petioles (usually longer than the blade), and mostly clathrate and roughened abaxial blade scales.
