Diagnosis.
Omalaspis brandaoi
n. sp.
is morphologically similar to
O. latreillii
, both having the frons coriaceous, median ridge blunt (only conspicuous between anterio-admedian lines) and scutellar foveae almost smooth, with scarce pubescence. But in
O. brandaoi
, the supratorular impression is very large and conspicuous, the dorsal margin of median mesoscutal sulcus is very well defined, curved, and the lateral margins of the scutellar disc nearly straight, while in
O. latreillii
, the supratorular impression is not enlarged and conspicuous, the dorsal margin of the median mesoscutal furrow is not well defined, it is pointed, and the lateral margins of the scutellar disc are confluent posteriorly, with the posterior margin narrow.
Description.
Length.
Female 3.0 to
3.9 mm
.; male
3.5 mm
.
Coloration.
Head and metasoma black. Mesosoma brown, except anterior surface of pronotum wich is partly black and mesoscutum variable, with small black area between antero-admedian lines or entirely black. Wing membrane slightly brownish or hyaline. Wing veins brown.
Head.
Frons coriaceous. Frontal carinae absent. Lateral frontal carinae prominent, space between them and compound eyes coriaceous. Supratorular impression deep and wide. Ocelli prominent, vertex in dorsal view coriaceous, with weak carinae and noticeable central furrow, which can be deep. Posterior vertex and occiput coriaceous. Genae margined, expanded, shiny to weakly coriaceous, with strong transverse carinae.
Antenna.
FEMALE. Filiform. Antennal formula: 5(2.5): 2(2): 6(2): 5(2): 5(2): 5(2): 4.5(2): 4(2): 4(2): 4(2): 3.5(2): 4(2): 7(2). MALE. Filiform, F1 strongly excavated laterally. Antennal formula: 5(3): 2(2): 7(2.5): 7(2): 6(2): 6(2): 6(2): 6(2): 5(2): 5(2): 5(2): 5(2): 5(2): 9(2).
Mesosoma.
Lateral surface of pronotum coriaceous, dorsal 1/3 sometimes with very weak, small carinae, basally with transverse carinae. Mesoscutum coriaceous. Parascutal sulcus shiny. Median ridge conspicuous anteriorly, absent posteriorly, antero-admedian lines conspicuous, straight, reaching 1/3 mesoscutum length. Median mesoscutal furrow shiny, with transverse carinae inside. Notauli wide posteriorly, narrow anteriorly, coriaceous, with fine transverse carinae. Mesosoma, in lateral view, slightly curved. Mesopleuron smooth. Scutellum 0.80 to 0.85 scutum length. Interfoveal line reaching 1/2 to 1/3 length of scutellar disc, as prominent as lateral margins of scutellum. Scutellar foveae weakly rugose. Scutellar disc with irregular and short transverse carinae, posterior margin of scutellum straight and wide.
Wing.
FEMALE. Radial cell 2.2 to 2.3 times longer than wide. R2 straight, slightly curved distally. MALE. Radial cell 2.1 to 2.2 times longer than wide. R2 straight, very slightly curved distally.
Distribution.
Nearctic,
USA
(
Missouri
, and
Virginia
) and
Canada
