This is one of three species of
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Braconidae" genus="Microplitis" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Microplitis" order="Hymenoptera" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Microplitis</taxonomicName>
described in this paper with elongate mouth parts (the other two being
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. juanmanueli" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="juanmanueli">M. juanmanueli</taxonomicName>
and
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. mariamargaritae" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="mariamargaritae">M. mariamargaritae</taxonomicName>
). Until now, no
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Braconidae" genus="Microplitis" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Microplitis" order="Hymenoptera" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Microplitis</taxonomicName>
in North America had been reported to have that character.
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. julioalbertoi" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="julioalbertoi">M. julioalbertoi</taxonomicName>
has a much shorter and stout metafemur (2.6
<normalizedToken originalValue="×">x</normalizedToken>
as long as wide; as compared with 2.8-3.3
<normalizedToken originalValue="×">x</normalizedToken>
in the other two species). It further differs from
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. mariamargaritae" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="mariamargaritae">M. mariamargaritae</taxonomicName>
in having an enlarged and acute hypopygium, with much longer ovipositor sheaths; and it can be separate from
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. juanmanueli" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="juanmanueli">M. juanmanueli</taxonomicName>
because of its normal-sized metasoma (metasoma being extraordinarily large in
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. juanmanueli" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="juanmanueli">M. juanmanueli</taxonomicName>
).
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. julioalbertoi" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="julioalbertoi">M. julioalbertoi</taxonomicName>
is also similar to
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. jorgeluisi" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="jorgeluisi">M. jorgeluisi</taxonomicName>
, but that species does not have elongated mouth parts, its palpi are yellow (dark brown in
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. julioalbertoi" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="julioalbertoi">M. julioalbertoi</taxonomicName>
) and the ovipositor sheaths do not have any setae (ovipositor with apical 0.3 with numerous setae which are as long as ovipositor sheaths width in
<taxonomicName lsidName="M. julioalbertoi" pageId="19" pageNumber="142" rank="species" species="julioalbertoi">M. julioalbertoi</taxonomicName>
).

Body reddish-brown, legs mostly orange-yellow (except for coxae). Wings entirely infumated, veins dark brown. Head finely sculptured, mesosoma and metasoma mostly smooth dorsally (except for strongly sculptured T1). Ovipositor sheaths smooth, with setae as long as sheaths width. Head elongate; malar line longer than mandible base; labrum large; mandibles very long and strongly curved; glossa

<paragraph pageId="20" pageNumber="143">The location of the female specimen from CT is roughly 1,500 kilometers north of the specimens from GA. However, no morphological differences to separate them could be found, and thus all are kept as one species for now (although the CT specimen is not considered as a paratype). No biological or molecular data is known for this species.</paragraph>

<paragraph pageId="0" pageNumber="1">Shell fusiform, translucent, yellowish brown and 3-4 white apical whorls; spire regularly attenuated. Shell surface nearly smooth to with thin growth lines; suture deep and distinct. Whorls 10-11, convex, regularly growing and attenuated to apex. Aperture oval-pear-shaped, less oblique, basis broader and narrowing towards parietal sinus; peristome protruded, thickened, and slightly expanded. Superior lamella developed, continuous with spiralis, and indistinct at transition to spiralis. Inferior lamella well developed, steeply ascending, distant from superior lamella and ending at peristome. Subcolumellaris emerged and invisible in oblique view. Principalis running along ventral-lateral side and anterior end visible through oblique apertural view. Palatal plicae ventral-lateral, 4-6 (usually 4): first plica strong and longest; second and third plicae short, parallel, oblique, and equal in length; fourth plica longer and stronger than middle plicae. Clausilium plate ventral side and narrow.</paragraph>

. From our recent field survey, several specimens were collected, and their shell morphology matched well with the diagnostic characters of
<taxonomicName lsidName="O. magna" pageId="0" pageNumber="1" rank="species" species="magna">
<emphasis italics="true" pageId="0" pageNumber="1">O. magna</emphasis>
</taxonomicName>
. Although
<taxonomicName lsidName="O. magna" pageId="0" pageNumber="1" rank="species" species="magna">
<emphasis italics="true" pageId="0" pageNumber="1">O. magna</emphasis>
</taxonomicName>
is highly similar to
<taxonomicName lsidName="O. gouldiana" pageId="0" pageNumber="1" rank="species" species="gouldiana">
<emphasis italics="true" pageId="0" pageNumber="1">O. gouldiana</emphasis>
</taxonomicName>
in shell form, it can be distinguished mainly by having a less ventricose shell, almost uniform and ventrally longer palatal plicae, more developed inferior spiral lamella, aperture less oblique, last whorl more compressed, spiralis starting deeply ventral, and clausilium ventrally seated. In genitalia,
<taxonomicName lsidName="O. gouldiana" pageId="0" pageNumber="1" rank="species" species="gouldiana">
<emphasis italics="true" pageId="0" pageNumber="1">O. gouldiana</emphasis>
</taxonomicName>
exhibits a long distal part of pedunculus almost the same length as the proximal part of pedunculus and an internal sculpture of epiphallus with a thin and irregular corrugated pattern. These differences in the shell and genitalia characters are greater than the intraspecific variation and those characters were not observed as a morphological variation among the
<taxonomicName lsidName="O. gouldiana" pageId="0" pageNumber="1" rank="species" species="gouldiana">
<emphasis italics="true" pageId="0" pageNumber="1">O. gouldiana</emphasis>
</taxonomicName>
populations examined; therefore, we have raised
<taxonomicName lsidName="O. magna" pageId="0" pageNumber="1" rank="species" species="magna">
<emphasis italics="true" pageId="0" pageNumber="1">O. magna</emphasis>
</taxonomicName>
to a distinct species.
