included individuals from banks of streams, on mud by a brook, and an individual collected by treading mud by a stream. In New Brunswick, the largest series was collected along a river margin under debris on a sand-clay mix. Other adults were collected from brook margins in alder swamps and a beaver meadow. Adults occurred in grass litter mixed with fine gravel and clay, among cobblestones and gravel, and leaf and grass litter from these brook margin habitats. This species was collected in May and June.

is a distinctive species with a pale head and pronotum and the elytra dark brown with the lateral margin yellow with distinctive, well defined yellow maculae (Fig. 31A). There is a prominent yellow macula on the elytral disc near the suture subbasally (Fig. 31A). There are a semiconnected pair of maculae at about 2/3 length of elytra (Fig. 31A). In some specimens the lateral macula is connected with the yellow lateral margin. Also, the elytral apex is yellow (Fig. 31A). The lateral elytral carina is absent (Fig. 31B). The prosternal process is elongate oval with the lateral margins slightly constricted medially (Fig. 31C). The metaventrite carinae are indistinct and mainly marked by impunctate lines that are strongly divergent posteriorly (Fig. 31C). The male median lobe in lateral aspect is basally triangular (Fig. 31D). The apical portion is slender and evenly curved to a slender, narrowly

apex (Fig. 31D). In ventral aspect the median lobe is bilaterally symmetrical, apically convergent to elongate, slender, pointed apex (Fig. 31E). The lateral lobe is relatively slender, curved medially with the apical 1/3 relatively straight and slender to rounded apex (Fig. 31F). The species is perhaps most similar to

TL = 2.7-3.1 mm, GW = 1.3-1.4 mm, PW = 1.1-1.2 mm, HW = 0.8-0.9 mm, EW = 0.4-0.5 mm, TL/GW = 2.1-2.2, HW/EW = 1.9. Body shape elongate, apically rounded, lateral outline discontinous between pronotum and elytron (Fig. 31A).</paragraph>
<paragraph id="1287B54AD78FF22DC5B0AEFD9013B60A" pageId="62" pageNumber="107">Coloration (Fig. 31A). Head and pronotum yellow. Elytron brown-yellow with diffuse yellow maculae anteromedially, medially and along margins anteriorly, mediolaterally, and at apex (Fig. 31A). Antennae, palps and legs yellow. Ventral surfaces yellow.</paragraph>
<paragraph id="1EB3618739A69AD21014514464F07A3B" pageId="62" pageNumber="107">Sculpture and structure. Head moderately elongate; anterior clypeal marign broadly rounded; surface shiny, nearly impunctate; eyes large. Pronotum broadest slightly anterior of middle, lateral margins broadly curved (Fig. 31A); lateral bead fine; surface shiny, covered with moderately large, distinctive punctation. Elytra elongate, apically rounded (Fig. 31A); lateral carina absent, slight rounding of elytron near humeral angle (Fig. 31B); surface shiny, covered with moderately large, distinctive punctation. Prosternum medially rounded and setose; prosternal process moderately slender, elongate, lateral margins subparallel, widest subapically, apex rounded, longitudinally somewhat excavated (Fig. 31C). Metaventrite with anterior process slender, short, apically narrowly rounded; metasternal carinae distinct only anteriorly along margins of process, extending posteriorly in broadly divergent rounded margins, terminating near anterior ends of metacoxal lines (Fig. 31C); other surfaces covered with moderately large, distinct punctures. Legs with most surfaces shiny, impunctate; pro- and mesotibiae slender; metatibia with posteroapical brush of setae distinctive; metatrochater distinctly offset, apically rounded; metacoxa with surface shiny, covered with moderately large, distinctive punctation; metacoxal lines elongate, relatively closely approximated and subparallel, only slightly diverging anteriorly (Fig. 31C). Abdomen shiny, covered with distinctive punctures; ventrite VI apcially broadly rounded.</paragraph>

Median lobe bilaterally symmetrical, in lateral aspect gently curved, curvature more pronounced basally, basal region broad, apical portion slender throughout length, apex slender and pointed (Fig. 31D); in ventral aspect slender, lateral margins evenly convergent to middle, then slightly constricted and apically slender to pointed apex (Fig. 31E). Lateral lobe moderately broad basally, elongate slender apically, apex rounded, with series of setae along dorsal margin (Fig. 31F).</paragraph>

Body subovate, with shallow constriction between pronotum and elytron; in profile almost evenly convex. Rostrum scabrous, basally with indistinct median ridge; epistome forming angulate ridge. Pronotum moderately densely punctate. Elytra with striae marked by small punctures; interval 4 basally with cluster of few narrow, cream-colored, recumbent scales; interval 7 subapically forming indistinct ridge. Meso- and metafemur with anteroventral ridge distinctly dentate. Meso- and metatibia in basal half widened; dorsal edge basally denticulate; subapically narrowed; uncus large, peg-shaped. Metafemur with serrate dorsoposterior edge, subapically without stridulatory patch. Venter subglabrous, concave. Aedeagus (Fig. 41b) with sides of body in apical third converging, apex rounded; orifice retracted; endophallus weakly granulate; transfer apparatus symmetrical, heart-shaped frame relatively thin; ductus ejaculatorius without bulbus. Intraspecific variation. Length 1.75-2.39 mm. Female rostrum dorsally subglabrous, sparsely punctate; epistome simple.</paragraph>

Dorsal profile convex from snout to end of dorsal-fin base, approximately straight on caudal peduncle. Ventral profile convex from lower jaw to end of anal-fin base, nearly straight on caudal peduncle. Body moderately deep, compressed, depth about 1.8 times body width in larger males. Greatest body depth at level of pelvic-fin base. Caudal peduncle short, about two thirds length of head.</paragraph>

Tip of pelvic fin reaching between base of 3rd and 4th anal-fin rays in males, between urogenital papilla and base of 1st anal-fin ray in females. Pelvic-fin bases medially in contact. Dorsal-fin origin anterior to anal-fin origin in males, anal-fin origin on vertical between base of 2nd and 4th dorsal-fin rays; dorsal-fin origin slightly anterior to slightly posterior to anal-fin origin in females. Dorsal-fin origin between neural spines of vertebrae 8 and 9 in males, between neural spines of vertebrae 9 and 11 in females. Anal-fin origin between pleural ribs of vertebrae 8 and 9 in males, between pleural ribs of vertebrae 9 and 11 in females. Dorsal-fin rays 21-22 in males, 16-17 in females; anal-fin rays 19-21 in males, 17-18 in females; caudal-fin rays 25-27; pectoral-fin rays 12-13; pelvic-fin rays 6.</paragraph>

Frontal squamation A-patterned. Longitudinal series of scales 26-27; transverse series of scales 9-10; scale rows around caudal peduncle 12-13. Minute contact organ on each scale of anteroventral portion of flank in males. Small papillate contact organs on upper surface of dorsal-most ray of pectoral-fin in males. Supraorbital neuromasts 11-12, arranged in a continuous series.</paragraph>

Basihyal triangular, longest width about 60 % of length; basihyal cartilage about 35 % of total length of basihyal. Six branchiostegal rays. Three teeth on second pharyngobranchial. Gill-rakers on first branchial arch 2 + 10. Vomerine teeth absent. Dermosphenotic absent. Ventral process of posttemporal long. Total vertebrae 27.</paragraph>

Side of head yellow ochre to bright greenish blue on opercular and infraorbital region. Scales on posterodorsal side of head and anterodorsal portion of flank red. Iris light purplish yellow, with dark brown bar through center of eye. Dorsal fin greenish brown; 7-8 greenish yellow elongate spots forming short bars on basal region, alternating with dark gray to black elongate spots; row of greenish blue short lines along distal margin of fin. Anal fin greenish brown, with 6 light greenish yellow bars. Caudal fin greenish yellow, with greenish blue margin; 6-7 light greenish yellow stripes, parallel to fin rays, radially diverging from fin base to fin margin, each stripe distally terminating in sharp tip, and alternating with elongate spots of identical color on subdistal portion of fin. Pelvic fin purplish brown. Pectoral fin hyaline.</paragraph>

Habitat: The new species was found in a temporary pool in the Cerrado, a typical savannah-like vegetation from central Brazil. The pool was shallow, about 1 m deep, densely covered by aquatic vegetation (Figs. 3-4). The water was dark gray, slightly turbid, and the pH 7.0 at the exact point where specimens were collected. No other annual fishes were found. Some specimens of

. Frontal surface of antennal basis with one basal, inner row of spinules arranged in an arc, and one longitudinal row of spinules near lateral margin (Fig. 12A). Antenna with three-segmented endopod bearing 1, 9, and 7 setae, respectively (Fig. 12B). Caudal surface of antennal basis with two rows of long spinules next to exopodal seta, one group of long spinules at basal position, one basal row on inner margin and another basal row on outer margin (Fig. 12B). Nine teeth on the distal margin of the labrum (Fig. 12C). Eight teeth present on gnathobase of mandible (Fig. 12D). Maxillular palp with three apical setae (one of these setae armed with long setules); lateral lobe with three setae, the longer seta armed; proximal seta nude (Fig. 12E). Maxillar basipodite with one claw-like projection bearing thin spines on concave margin and one long seta with one (Fig. 12F) or four tiny spinules (
