This colour pattern is shared only by + +P. deflexum + +( +Figs 29 +, +84 +), but living males of this species have the anterior half of the eyes distinctly yellow ( +Figs 157, 158 +). The laterally subrectangular male appendages of + +P. declaratum + +( +Fig. 134a +) separate this species from several congeners as well, especially from the similarly coloured + +P. deflexum + +, in which the cercus is distinctly arched in lateral view ( +Figs 135a +, +159 +). The male caudal appendages of + +P. obscurum + +and + +P. simalurum + +( +Figs 140a–c, 141a–c +) as well as of + +P. igneum + +and + +P. nigrihumerale + +( +Figs 138a–c, 139a–c +) have superficial similarities with those of + +P. declaratum + +, but these species (except for + +P. nigrihumerale + +) are separated by having S1–2 dorsally black ( +Figs 121a, b +, +123a, b, 124a, b +), black colouration around the postocular spots ( +Figs 87, 88, 89, 90 +), and regarding + +P. nigrihumerale + +by having a black humeral stripe ( +Fig. 105 +). + + + + +Distribution + + +This species is distributed from +Java +towards the +Lesser Sunda Islands +Bali +, Lombok, Sumbawa, +Flores +, +Sumba, Sawu +, and reaching Alor ( +Fig. 2 +). + + + + \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/data/0E/57/D1/0E57D167F743FFE5FF66DBC4FC299A44.xml b/data/0E/57/D1/0E57D167F743FFE5FF66DBC4FC299A44.xml new file mode 100644 index 00000000000..1796898c75e --- /dev/null +++ b/data/0E/57/D1/0E57D167F743FFE5FF66DBC4FC299A44.xml @@ -0,0 +1,528 @@ + + + +Revision of the Pseudagrion red-group occurring in Asia west of Lydekker’s line, with description of four new species (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) + + + +Author + +Seehausen, Malte +0009-0000-6718-1078 +Zoologisches Museum der CAU zu Kiel, Hegewischstr. 3, 24105 Kiel, Germany, mseehausen @ zoolmuseum. uni-kiel. de; https: // orcid. org / 0009 - 0000 - 6718 - 1078 +mseehausen@zoolmuseum.uni-kiel.de + + + +Author + +Kalkman, Vincent J. +0000-0002-1484-7865 +Naturalis Biodiversity Center, 2300 RA Leiden, the Netherlands, vincent. kalkman @ naturalis. nl; https: // orcid. org / 0000 - 0002 - 1484 - 7865 +vincent.kalkman@naturalis.nl + + + +Author + +Bedjanič, Matjaž +0009-0000-6718-1078 +Zoologisches Museum der CAU zu Kiel, Hegewischstr. 3, 24105 Kiel, Germany, mseehausen @ zoolmuseum. uni-kiel. de; https: // orcid. org / 0009 - 0000 - 6718 - 1078 & National Institute of Biology, Večna pot 121, SI- 1000, Ljubljana, Slovenia, matjaz. bedjanic @ nib. si; https: // orcid. org / 0000 - 0002 - 1926 - 0086 * Corresponding author & Zoologisches Museum der CAU zu Kiel, Hegewischstr. 3, 24105 Kiel, Germany, mseehausen @ zoolmuseum. uni-kiel. de; https: // orcid. org / 0009 - 0000 - 6718 - 1078 +mseehausen@zoolmuseum.uni-kiel.de + +text + + +Zootaxa + + +2025 + +2025-02-12 + + +5587 + + +1 + + +1 +66 + + + + +https://doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.5587.1.1 + +journal article +10.11646/zootaxa.5587.1.1 +1175-5334 +B6F6D9C8-4423-4DC6-BC25-940725A83DB4 + + + + + + + +Pseudagrion deflexum +Lieftinck, 1936 + +stat. nov. + + + + +Figures: 29–30 ( +lectotype + +, envelope); 84 (head + +); 101 (pterothorax + +); 118a, b (abdomen + +); 135a–c (caudal appendages + +); 156–160 (field photos + +). + + + + + + + +Pseudagrion pilidorsum deflexum +Lieftinck (1936) +: 130 + + +, 134, +Fig. 13c +(description + +; + +appendages; key; Timor);— + +Lieftinck (1953) +: 157 + +(Damar, Wetar);— + +Seehausen (2017) +: 5 + +, 8, +Fig. 6 +(Timor; photo + +preserved dry specimen);— + + +Seehausen +et al +. This stream is about one metre wide, with sparse bank vegetation, and the surroundings are covered by forest. The locality is situated about +5 km +SW of the locality where the species has been observed a month later by + +Koparde +et al +. (2018) + +, and approximately +80 km +N of the species’ locality in the Middle Andaman, where a male of the species was collected in +June 1997 +, and reported by Hämäläinen +et al +. (1999). It is expected that with further targeted fieldwork in the right season and in suitable habitats, the species will be found at additional localities on the Andaman Islands. However, as the newly described + +Pseudagrion + +is a colourful and quite conspicuous damselfly, the fact that only records of +six males +are known to date, and that rather recent fieldtrips of M. Only three species, namely the Sulawesian + +P. crocops + +, + +P. halmaherae + +from Halmahera, and + +P. buenafei + +from Mindanao, +Philippines +have a similar broad black humeral marking. Apart from their distant range and the morphological differences in the caudal appendages (compare +Figs 131a–c, 133a–c, 137a–c, 139a–c +), the males of the latter three species differ from + +P. nigrihumerale + +in their colour pattern as well. Beside the name-giving black humeral marking, + +P. nigrihumerale + +can be separated from its Andaman congener + +P. igneum + +by having S1–2 dorsally red and S10 entirely black ( +Figs 43 +, +49 +, +121a, b, 122a, b +), by having a black vertex and by lacking red colour on the postfrons ( +Figs 47 +, +53 +, +87, 88 +), whereas the male appendages of both species are identical ( +Figs 138a–c, 139a–c +). The southerly distributed species + +P. simalurum + +and + +P. obscurum + +differ by the same colour markings as listed for + +P. igneum + +, but also very slightly in the male appendages: the cercus of + +P. nigrihumerale + +bears a small subbasal tooth situated at the proximal third of the inferior lobe, whereas in + +P. simalurum + +and + +P. obscurum + +there is a sharp edged bulge that only looks like a tooth in dorsal view ( +Figs 140a–c, 141a–c +). + + + + +Distribution + + +Apparently endemic to the +Nicobar Islands +, +India +( +Fig. 2 +). + + + + \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/data/0E/57/D1/0E57D167F74FFFD3FF66DFEAFA2F9DE0.xml b/data/0E/57/D1/0E57D167F74FFFD3FF66DFEAFA2F9DE0.xml new file mode 100644 index 00000000000..da8de9a7189 --- /dev/null +++ b/data/0E/57/D1/0E57D167F74FFFD3FF66DFEAFA2F9DE0.xml @@ -0,0 +1,442 @@ + + + +Revision of the Pseudagrion red-group occurring in Asia west of Lydekker’s line, with description of four new species (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) + + + +Author + +Seehausen, Malte +0009-0000-6718-1078 +Zoologisches Museum der CAU zu Kiel, Hegewischstr. 3, 24105 Kiel, Germany, mseehausen @ zoolmuseum. uni-kiel. de; https: // orcid. org / 0009 - 0000 - 6718 - 1078 +mseehausen@zoolmuseum.uni-kiel.de + + + +Author + +Kalkman, Vincent J. +0000-0002-1484-7865 +Naturalis Biodiversity Center, 2300 RA Leiden, the Netherlands, vincent. kalkman @ naturalis. nl; https: // orcid. org / 0000 - 0002 - 1484 - 7865 +vincent.kalkman@naturalis.nl + + + +Author + +Bedjanič, Matjaž +0009-0000-6718-1078 +Zoologisches Museum der CAU zu Kiel, Hegewischstr. 3, 24105 Kiel, Germany, mseehausen @ zoolmuseum. uni-kiel. de; https: // orcid. org / 0009 - 0000 - 6718 - 1078 & National Institute of Biology, Večna pot 121, SI- 1000, Ljubljana, Slovenia, matjaz. bedjanic @ nib. si; https: // orcid. org / 0000 - 0002 - 1926 - 0086 * Corresponding author & Zoologisches Museum der CAU zu Kiel, Hegewischstr. 3, 24105 Kiel, Germany, mseehausen @ zoolmuseum. uni-kiel. de; https: // orcid. org / 0009 - 0000 - 6718 - 1078 +mseehausen@zoolmuseum.uni-kiel.de + +text + + +Zootaxa + + +2025 + +2025-02-12 + + +5587 + + +1 + + +1 +66 + + + + +https://doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.5587.1.1 + +journal article +10.11646/zootaxa.5587.1.1 +1175-5334 +B6F6D9C8-4423-4DC6-BC25-940725A83DB4 + + + + + + + +Pseudagrion obscurum +Lieftinck, 1936 + +stat. nov. + + + + +Figures: 59–60 ( +syntype + +, envelope); 89a, b (head + +); 106 (pterothorax + +); 123a, b (abdomen + +); 140a–c (caudal appendages + +). + + + + + + +Pseudagrion pilidorsum obscurum + +: + +Lieftinck (1936) +: 128 + +, 131–132, +Fig. 12b +(key; description + + +; + +appendages; Nias & probably Simalur). + + + + + + +Name-bearing +type +specimens examined + +( +2♂♂ +) + + + +2♂♂ +syntypes +, + +10.ix.1931 + +, Amadraja, +Nias Island +, +Indonesia +, +J.C. +v. d. +M. Legs pale, with outside of the femora obscurely blackish; tibiae blackish along spines; spines black. + + +Abdomen +( +Figs 59 +, +123a, b +): S1–2 dorsally black, laterally red; S3–8 dorsally black, laterally and each basal annulus yellow-orange; S9 red, with its posterior third to half black; S10 dorsally with black “x”-like marking, variable in shape; laterally red. + + +Caudal appendages +( +Figs 140a–c +): Cercus in lateral view darkish, shorter than S10, inferior lobe appears very slightly shorter than superior lobe; in lateral view cercus subrectangular with a shallow inter-lobe notch situated low on the apex; in dorsal view the terminus of the superior lobe of the cercus curved inwards; a small interior projection is situated around the centre of cercus; a small sharp-edged bulge-like interior projection before half-length on the inferior lobe of the cercus, visible in dorsal and dorsolateral views; paraproct pale brownish-ochre, around half as long as cercus; in lateral view subtriangular and tapered with rounded apex; in dorsal view broadly rounded, concave bowl-like; bearing a small black tooth at medial edge. + + +Characterization of female + + +Head +: With dark markings as in male, but primary colour orange-ochre. + + +Thorax +: Pronotum markings as in male, but primary colour yellow-orange; posterior lobe of pronotum with two black horns directed towards head, almost reaching the centre of the middle lobe. Pterothorax entirely reddish; humeral suture with an elongated black patch at posterior quarter; black markings at interpleural and metapleural suture narrow. + + +Abdomen +: S1–10 dorsally black, laterally pale yellow-ochre; S9 pale yellow-ochre laterally, this expanded dorsally in centre; S10 with pale yellowish-ochre middorsal marking. Cercus blackish; paraproct brownish, in lateral view rounded; ovipositor pale yellowish-ochre, not reaching posterior margin of S10; two brownish styles reaching to beyond S10; inferior edge of ovipositor bearing several very small teeth. + +Wings of both sexes with 12.5–14.5 px in forewing, and 11.5–13 px in hindwing. +Measurements of both sexes (mm): Total length (with appendages) 37.8–44.3; abdomen length (without appendages) 32.0–36.0; hindwing 21.8–24.5; forewing 22.9–27.5; Pt in forewing 0.8–1.0; male cercus 0.5–0.6. + + + +Remarks + + +The single female has an entirely reddish pterothorax and lacks the name-giving obscurely blackish dorsum, which is present in all +four males +examined. It is not clear if this obscuring is just due to older age in the males or gender-related. + + + + +Diagnosis + + + +Pseudagrion obscurum + +belongs to the group of endemic taxa of the island chain west of +Sumatra +. Due to scarcity of material we cannot give information on how to separate the females, but the males are separated from most congeners occurring on adjacent islands by having S1–2 dorsally black ( +Figs 59 +, +123a, b +). However this character is shared by + +P. igneum + +( +Figs 121a, b +) and + +P. simalurum + +( +Figs 124a, b +)—both are very similar to + +P. obscurum + +also in the colour of the head ( +Figs 87, 89a, b, 90 +), and the morphology of the male cercus ( +Figs 138a–c +, +140a–c, 141a–c +). The morphology of the male caudal appendages of + +P. perfuscatum + +and + +P. pilidorsum + +is almost identical ( +Figs 142a–c, 143a–c +). But at least in fully mature males the colour pattern separates both species: + +P. pilidorsum + +has less black on vertex and along the largely red postocular spots compared to + +P. perfuscatum + +( +Figs 91, 92 +). Additionally mature males of + +P. perfuscatum + +have the dorsum of S1–2 blackish and covered with pruinosity ( +Figs 61 +, +125a, b +, +163, 164 +), the lower half of the pterothorax is covered with pruinosity as well, and usually there is a black humeral stripe ( +Figs 61 +, +108 +, +163, 164 +)—making the colour pattern almost unmistakable; whereas + +P. pilidorsum + +has the dorsum of S1–2 reddish ( +Figs 126a, b +, +165, 166 +), the pruinosity on them is restricted to venter, and at least slightly expanded laterally, the pruinosity on the pterothorax is restricted to the venter and metepimeron, and a humeral stripe is lacking ( +Figs 63, 64 +, +109 +, +165, 166 +). Pterothorax red, with a thin black middorsal carina; humeral suture and metapleural suture each with a black stripe at posterior quarter, both slightly expanded in the middle dorsally and ventrally; metapleural suture may be covered with whitish pruinosity; interpleural suture with a thin black stripe at posterior quarter; venter pale, often covered with whitish pruinosity. Legs with femur and tibia pale reddish-white; femora bearing a black stripe outside reaching from distal margin to proximal half; tibiae blackish along spines; spines black. + + +Abdomen +( +Figs 63 +, +126a, b +, +165, 166 +): Variable in the whole range but generally with S1 red; S2 red, along its posterior carina black; S3 variable: in specimens from the +Philippines +, +Taiwan +, and +Japan +generally reddish, with variable washed-out blackish dorsal marking at posterior margin; in specimens from Borneo often dorsally black ( +Fig. 166 +); S4 variable: predominantly reddish, with variable washed-out blackish dorsal marking at posterior margin; in specimens from +Palawan +Islands/ +Philippines +it may be almost completely black dorsally, but usually at least the anterior margin remains washed-out reddish; in specimens from +Japan +S4 is dorsally black; S5 variable: Philippine specimens are predominantly black dorsally, but anterior edge may be washed-out with reddish in different extent; specimens from +Basilan +Island/ +Philippines +and from +Taiwan +have S5 reddish with a dark dorsal marking at posterior margin; S6–8 dorsally black; S9 red with posterior quarter to half black, sometimes with edges of black serrated; S10 red, predominantly with a black dorsal “x”-like marking, variable in exact shape; but segment may also be completely black dorsally, with only two small reddish spots (e.g. in a male from +Okinawa +, +Japan +). + + +Caudal appendages +( +Figs 143a–c +): Cercus laterally washed-out blackish, but may be reddish at base; in lateral view cercus shorter than S10, the upper margin slightly convex, its apex almost square, inter-lobe notch not apparent in this view; in dorsal view the apical part of the superior lobe of the cercus curved inwards and runs as a ridge to the inter-lobe notch, with a separate inward directed projection proximal of this visible in dorsolateral view; another inwardly directed projection is situated more proximally at before the middle of the cercus; the inferior lobe with a ridge, best visible in dorsolateral view; a small bulge-like interior projection at the base of the ridge is visble in dorsal and dorsolateral view; paraproct pale yellow-orange, slightly shorter than cercus; in lateral view subtriangular and tapered, with rounded apex; in dorsal view broadly rounded, concave bowl-like; bearing a black tooth at medial edge. + + +Characterization of female + + +Head: +Dark markings similar to male, but primary colours pale orange-ochre; postocular spots may be tinged greenish. + + +Thorax +: Pronotum markings as in male, but primary colour orange-ochre instead of reddish; posterior lobe of pronotum with two orange-ochre horns directed towards head, reaching the centre of the middle lobe. Pterothorax with primary colour orange-ochre; dark markings as in male; antehumeral area of pterothorax may be tinged greenish. + + +Abdomen +: S1–2 orange-ochre, with black dorsal markings, variable in size; S3 either orange-ochre, with a black dorsal marking posteriorly, variable in size, or completely black dorsally; S7–8 dorsally black, laterally pale yellowish; S9–10 either black dorsally, or black reduced to “x”-like marking, variable in exact shape; laterally yellow-ochre, this colour expanded dorsally in centre of segment, leaving anterior and posterior margin black. Cercus blackish; paraproct washed-out dark brownish; in lateral view rounded; ovipositor pale yellowish-ochre, not reaching posterior margin of S10, two brownish styles reaching beyond S10; inferior edge of ovipositor bearing several very small teeth. + +Wings of both sexes with 11.5–14.5 px in forewing and 9.5–12.5 px in hindwing. +Measurements of both sexes (mm): Total length (with appendages) 38.6–45.8; abdomen length (without appendages) 31.4–37.0; hindwing 21.3–25.7; forewing 22.7–27.8; Pt in forewing 0.7–1.0; male cercus 0.5–0.6. + + + +Diagnosis + + +The combination of a red clypeus and red frons ( +Figs 64 +, +92 +), a red pterothorax ( +Figs 63, 64 +, +109 +, +165, 166 +), and at least red S1–2, but up to S1–5 red ( +Figs 126a, b +, +165, 166 +), makes this species unmistakable. The red clypeus and frons are shared only by + +P. perfuscatum + +, but this species has smaller postocular spots and more extensive black on vertex ( +Figs 61 +, +91 +, +163, 164 +). Additionally mature males of + +P. perfuscatum + +have the pterothorax reddish-brown, covered with pruinosity up to interpleural suture, often a broad blackish humeral stripe ( +Figs 61 +, +108 +, +163, 164 +), and S1–2 are dorsally blackish and covered with pruinosity ( +Figs 61 +, +15a, b +, +163, 164 +).
