+This new species is similar to

+, such as creeping and slightly thick and shiny leaves, but distinct from it by having anisosporophylls, ventral and dorsal leaves that are ovate or broad-ovate, and an acute apex.

+Description.
+Plant epilithic, seasonally green, shortly creeping. Rhizophores restricted to lower part of stem, borne on ventral side in axils of branches,
+0.1 mm
+in diam., 2.5-3.0 mm in length. Main stems branched throughout, terete, not sulcate, glabrous, branchlets sparse. Axillary leaves on branches symmetrical or slightly asymmetrical, ovate, 1.1-1.5 ×
+0.6-0.7 mm
+, slightly carinate, base exauriculate, margin entire in basal half, upward slightly ciliolate. Dorsal leaves slightly ascending, asymmetrical, broad-ovate, 0.7-1.0 ×
+0.6-0.8 mm
+, slightly carinate, base obtuse to rounded, margin denticulate or very shortly sparsely ciliolate, not membranous, apex acute, the distance between upper and lower two adjacent dorsal leaves are about 2.0 mm. Ventral leaves slightly ascending, asymmetrical, ovate, 1.0-1.3 ×

+The specific epithet ‘austrotibetica’ refers to its location at South
+Xizang
+.
+
+
+Conservation status.
+
+Selaginella austrotibetica
+
+was found only in a small area with few individuals in Mêdog County,
+Xizang
+. Therefore, this species should be considered as Critical Endangered (CR), according to the IUCN Red List guidelines.

+, because it is slightly slenderer than in the description provided by
+Graves (2011)
+. According to the same authors, there seems to be a lot of morphological variability in

+. The Korean population corresponded with the original description in this view. However, the nuclear apparatus and the cortical granulation differ from those of the

+population, which has an inconspicuous nuclear apparatus and cortical granules easily confused with the cytoplasmic granules (

+Description.
+Holotype
+female:
+
+Carapace blackish brown, oval, longer than wide, a yellowish brown median band and a pair of lateral stripes in thoracic region (Fig. 1A). Longitudinal fovea needle-shaped. AME larger than ALE, AME separated from each other by the diameter of AME, AME separated from ALE by about the diameter of AME, AER slightly recurved from frontal view (Fig. 1C). Clypeus yellowish brown with a pair of blackish brown markings. Chelicerae brown, dorsal and ventral surface infuscate with a black longitudinal band dorsally, 2 promarginal teeth and 2 retromarginal teeth, outer retromargial tooth and inner promarginal tooth larger and bifurcate (Fig. 1E). Endite pale yellowish brown. Labium blackish brown. Sternum round with pointed tip, reddish brown with blackish brown margin, longer than wide (Fig. 1D). Legs stout and strongly developed, yellowish brown, mottled, matatarsi and tarsi lighter. Abdomen ovoid, blackish brown, mottled, anterior part with cardiac pattern, no particular pattern visible, longer than wide (Fig. 1A). Epigyne with a pair of short atrium at middle, a pair of copulatory openings at lower part, median septum thick, spermathecae extend to the upper end of the atrium, spermathecal stalk thick, a pair of fertilization ducts with pointed tip at lower part (Fig. 1G, H).

+Allotype

+
+Similar to female, smaller than female. Carapace black (Fig. 1B). Legs shorter and lighter than female. Chelicerae brown, dorsal and ventral surface infuscate with a black longitudinal band dorsally, 2 promarginal teeth and 2 retromarginal teeth, outer retromargial tooth and inner promarginal tooth larger and bifurcate (Fig. 1F). Palp with sock-shaped median apophysis bearing round basal spur (Fig. 1L), conductor broad, embolus filiform and curved counterclockwise direction, white pubescence on femur and patella, tarsus without prominent claw, palpal tibia shorter than tarsus, palpal tibia and tarsus black (Fig. 1I- K).

+Remarks.
+This species was collected using a pitfall trap on a ridge between rice fields and seem to prefer habitats with relatively high humidity.

+as the correct name for this taxon and treated

+as illegitimate names without any elaboration. Later, the authorship of the species was discussed in detail by
+Kartesz and Gandhi (1990)
+. While reviewing
+Gaudin’s (1811)
+work, they found the name of

+A. elegans
+Willd.
+
+was incorrect because this taxon name was includ- ed under
+
+Aira caryophyllea
+
+without any accepted number as a legitimate name. Therefore,
+
+Aira elegantissima
+
+should be an accepted name for this taxon.

Floatoblasts oval, light brown to dark brown, asymmetrical, ventral strongly convex and dorsal almost flat, 236.89 (230.51- 243.28) μm long by 161.63 (150.88-172.39) μm wide, length/width ration of about 1.5. Dorsal fenestra small, oval, 80.50 μm long by 52.35 μm wide, length/width ration of about 1.5, less than half as long as ventral fenestra. (
