This species differs from the other species of the family occurring in the freshwaters of the country (Pacific) by the following combination of characters: body very elongate (depth 9.014.0% of SL), compressed and eel-like; head small (5.08.0% of SL); dorsal fin long, with seven flexible spines and 1415 rays; anal fin rays 15; caudal fin long, pointed and broadly joined to dorsal and anal fins; and coloration pattern (see
