<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Sepedophilus" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Sepedophilus campbelli" order="Coleoptera" pageId="4" pageNumber="33" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="campbelli">Sepedophilus campbelli</taxonomicName>
is distinguished from other species of the genus in northeastern North America by the combination of: pronotum and elytra without
<pageBreakToken pageId="5" pageNumber="34" start="start">microsculpture</pageBreakToken>
and without pale or reddish markings; small size (&lt;1.7mm from the clypeus to the elytral apex); middle-tibia with two apical spines; basal abdominal segments with long lateral bristles.

described this species (under the homonymic name
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Sepedophilus" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Sepedophilus micans" order="Coleoptera" pageId="5" pageNumber="34" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="micans">Sepedophilus micans</taxonomicName>
), eight specimens were known from scattered localities in Alabama, Maryland, District of Columbia, and North Carolina. Recently, five specimens of

were found in Cuivre River State Park, Missouri, at blacklight and under bark (

has been found in Ohio and Florida but without further details. We here report
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Sepedophilus" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Sepedophilus campbelli" order="Coleoptera" pageId="5" pageNumber="34" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="campbelli">Sepedophilus campbelli</taxonomicName>
as new for Virginia, contributing to the faunistics of this poorly known species (Map 4).

was recommended for state listing as S3 rank in Missouri based on rarity there and elsewhere (

). Although one specimen has been found on a dead chicken (
